Authority vs Celebrity … Is There a Difference?

by Jeff Quipp.

Is an authority in a given industry necessarily a celebrity, and visa versa?

Lee Odden recently made an interesting post The Fallacy of SEO Celebrity earlier this week, echoed shortly after by Rand Fishkin with his Desire for Fame in the SEO World post. I wonder if this post has been misinterpreted … think I did at first too.

These posts resulted in a blog volley from a different perspective … the Fame Game and Take Your Fame and Shove It. All posts caused me to think even harder about the subject of authority (though Dave’s made me laugh too), as did Lyndon’s (Cornwall SEO) response in the SEOmoz post, and will cause me to rethink what I postulated earlier.

The Impetus:

What Is Authority, and How Do You Build It?

by Jeff Quipp.

How do you define authority as it relates to search?

The whole concept seems very generic and loosely defined at the moment. In this, the second post in the series (the first published last week I Jeff Quipp am not an SEO! I’m an Authority Builder), we’ll explore the definition of an authority, and various possible strategies to either become, or help a client become, an authority.

What is Authority?
An authority is someone or some entity who’s opinion(s) about specific topics are respected and valued by industry peers. This definition is both interesting and important because it can guide much of our decision making going forward. Case in point, it suggests why we blog in many cases, and for whom we blog.

Social media is changing and evolving. In essence, social media sites like the search engines of 8-9 years ago, are growing up. They’re learning from their mistakes, and are constantly improving.

Of course, this constant evolution means that users of social media must too change and adapt to the fluid landscape.

For anyone hoping to get their submissions seen by the masses on various social media, this means continuously expanding your network of friends.

In particular, there are 3 reasons to continuously build out friends in various social media:

What is ‘Authority’ with respect to SEO?

The answer may surprise you!

Here’s what most SEOs can say with utmost confidence; we know that the concept of ‘authority’ is an important one to rankings and traffic from organic search.

Its comical though, perhaps even sad. Over time, “Authority” has come to mean something completely different to Google, than it does to SEOs. This is no one’s fault … just a condition created by imperfect information, and the need to suffice.

The Engines’ Definition of Authority:
To Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, et al, links are the consequence of being an authority, they do not make you an authority.

Digg Isn’t on Crack … Its Just Using An Addiction Marketing Strategy

by Jeff Quipp.

Def’n ‘Addiction Marketing’ - Pronunciation [uh-dik-shuhn mahr-ki-ting]:
A strategy used by companies [read Digg], whereby a product or drug [read front page appearances] with near instant addictive properties is given away free or very inexpensively on the first few ocassions until the victim is addicted. Prices [read level of difficulty] are then raised, demand having been secured.

I’ll give credit for this terminology to Mike Myatt who claims to have coined this term a number of years ago.

You May Be a Search Spammer if …

by Jeff Quipp.

Along the lines of Jeff Foxworthy’s humour, lets start off the week with a fun post …

You may be a search spammer if …

1) you know what a Markov Chain is

2) you use an image editor to write your emails

3) using the same free counter service for all the sites in your network brings down the free counter service

4) content is what you are, not what you publish

5) you think of him as “Matt Cutts Me Out”

6) you think of subtitles as alt keyword stuffing

10 Things I learned this week

by Jeff Quipp.

Personally and professionally, this past week has been challenging to say the least. I’ve been virtually AWOL from the web and tried to catch up on a weeks worth of reading this Sunday afternoon.

Here are 10 interesting articles that caught my attention and what I learned:

What you don’t know about Facebook: Don Peat of the Toronto Sun reveals some fascinating information about the social media giant including the country with the highest per-capita number of users, average age, number of friends and daily visits of each user and the fact that the Toronto Facebook ( 1+ million and counting) network is made up mostly of women who keep their political views and relationship status private.
