mobile social network

In last weeks post wrote I that Local Search is predicted to be the killer app for mobile phones based on a Juniper Research report predicting that Local search is to account for 43% of cumulative mobile search advertising revenues between 2008 and 2013.

Hot off the heels of this study comes a new Nielson Mobile report showing a growing number of mobile phone subscribers worldwide are taking online social networking to the pubs, streets and subways!

The Nielsen Mobile report show that the U.K. leads Europe in mobile social networking with the U.S. showing similar numbers.

Retail Therapy

Retail therapy helps us to feel so much better when things don’t go our way, and it would seem that the same is true for large corporations with lots and lots and lots of big bucks!

Since Microsoft’s offer to purchase Yahoo! didn’t seem to turn out, they have found themselves with all this money for acquisition available and a designer outfit that appears to be unavailable at this time. Like any savvy fashionista, they’ve decided it was time to head to the mall for some serious retail therapy to make themselves feel better about not getting what they’ve been holding all that lovely money for. LO AND BEHOLD! Like spying the first Abercrombie & Fitch store L.A. (and a demographic to match), Microsoft has decided to head on over to facebook and see what fits.

According to a new Juniper Research report, 1.3 billion mobile users are expected to use local mobile search services by 2013. So it would seem that everyone is in a race to become as transparent as possible. It has become (clearly) evident that there is more revenue potential out there by opening up everything and making it available than there is by keeping it all horded and secret and hidden in the dark.

Cell phone technology is a brilliant example of transparency becoming extremely key. It’s helping mobile carriers and equipment providers to quickly and easily design, develop, and deploy in tandem. It’s also giving software development platforms such as Google and Microsoft the opportunity to build out their handset web technologies.

I’m a stats junkie. I just love surveys, research papers and opinion polls, so its no accident that I enjoy sharing my finds with the our readers. I look for ways to use the information in order to assist our clients by incorporating relevant trends into our their online marketing initiatives. This is why I loved this new Burst Media Survey on consumer recall of advertising with a green message.

Essentially, the survey shows consumer recall of advertising with “green” messaging is high, with 37.1% saying they frequently recall green messaging, however they remain very skeptical about claims made.

WordPress Has Been Hacked: Are You Protected?

Wordpress Hackers

For more than 7 years now, I’ve been working with websites based on popular applications such as WordPress, Vbulletin and PHPnuke. When dealing with such popular applications, words like ‘hacking’ or ’security hole’ will become something that you’ll get use to either dealing with or worrying about.

In the last 2 years, there have been some major developing concerns. Today, Hackers are much more familiar with the importance of links and, since some may be SEO’s, are using hacking as a link building strategy or as a negative link building tactic targeting the ranking of their competitors. Regardless of the intention of the Hacker, your website’s ranking may be damaged to some degree.

Yahoo! adds video to Flickr - Google to Maps

google yahoo video search

It was an interesting week in the business of online video with news coming from both major search engines.

Google announced that you can now embed YouTube videos in business profile pages in Google Maps. Videos are displayed in the “Photos & Videos” tab in the extended listing tab that appears when you click on a listing.

google local business centre

The Google blog points to the following example:

google maps video

According to Google, Local business owners can “easily” add YouTube videos, although I would argue that some will need help to fully take advantage of the opportunity. Long term though, Google plans a plug and play version accessed directly from the Local Business Center.

Oh, Canada……

Andrew Goodman, of Traffick.com and Page Zero Media, and I are if not friends, well, at least peers with a mutual and healthy respect for each other both knowing exactly how long the other has been at this Search (whether paid or otherwise) stuff in this country. Over the years we’ve lunched, coffee’d and conferenced together.

And always, one theme has come up. When and why did Canada miss the boat when it comes to search and the Internet?

Coincidentally, Andrews post of today “When Registering Domains, Think Big”, he states:

Personally, I have a real problem with the .ca.

Traditional Media By The Numbers: Yellow Pages

yellow pages

I have Yellow Pages on Google alert and with the Yellow Pages annual conference titled “YP Industry Pledges Counteroffensive.” last week in Las Vegas, it’s no wonder my inbox was overflowing with stats, figures and opinions on its future.

According to the latest Industry Usage Study from the Yellow Pages Association, they are certainly aiming to overcome some of the mis-perceptions we have about who uses print Yellow Pages, how often and why. The most surprising news was that residents and businesses in many of the top U.S. Designated Market Areas (DMA’s) rely heavily on the Yellow Pages.

Fiddle Dee Dee - Is Yahoo Gone With The Wind?

Tom Tsinas by Tom Tsinas

With the flurry of news stories running rampant over the past 24-48 hours, poor Scarlett Yahoo must be exhausted. Who indeed to take to the cotillion? There’s that awful Rhett MSN or that nice Ashley Wilkes Google.

Frankly, I’m reminded of the opening scene with Scarlett on the veranda cloying with prospective suitors and the saga is all a little exhausting. Makes me want for a nice Mint Julip and a nap until this whole silly thing blows over

Afterall, tomorrow is just another trading day.
