In June 2011, comScore puts Google's worldwide reach at 1 billion unique visitors per month.

While the numbers are impressive they also reveal two "neck on neck" races: Google vs. Microsoft and Facebook vs. Yahoo.

The latter two especially make for an interesting race. Yahoo has been growing quite a bit while Facebook is reaching a level of market penetration where numbers are expected to level off somewhat.

Stats on Tumblr and WordPress.com show: Tumblr now hosts more blogs than WordPress.com does.

While the graph looks impressive the difference between the two is just 0.4%

The count doesn't include blogs using the blogging platform WordPress available from WordPress.org; only the hosted blogs at WordPress.com are taken into account.

Also, it's not known how many blogs on either site are abandoned.

Tumblr: More Blogs, Less Popular?

Search popularity for the two is hard(er) to determine. "Tumblr" can be a navigational or informational query. So can "wordpress" but that term can apply to self-hosted blogs as well.

There's virtually no search volume for "wordpress.com"

Given that the searches for "wordpress" must include destinations other than wordpress.com, Tumblr's search performance world-wide over the past 12 months is impressive.

Still, looking at traffic data as provided by Google Trends (and reflected in data from other providers), Tumblr has a lot of ground to cover before its blogs draw the same amount of daily unique visitors WordPress.com does.

Do you think the fact that Tumblr has more blogs but a lot less traffic means Tumblr just isn't that popular?

According to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, PR professionals outnumber journalists by 3 to 1.

The numbers are possibly much higher by now: the data dates from 2008.

Per 100.000 population there were 0.9 PR professionals in 2008 vs. 0.25 journalists.

From 1997 to 2007 there has been a 30% job growth in independent Public Relations. This excludes in-house PR or PR departments in advertising or SEO agencies.

Meanwhile newspaper newsrooms are 30% smaller than they were in 2000, according to Pew Research.

Close to 1 of every 5 Canadians owns a smartphone. That is: every 3rd mobile mobile phone is a smartphone.

Those numbers are more or less on a par with other countries.

Canada's most popular smartphone platform is RIM's Blackberry. Apple is trailing more than 10% behind. The remainder of the market is fragmented without a clear market leader.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo says 80% of its advertisers renew their campaign. From EOY 2010 to medio 2011 the number of advertisers on Twitter grew from 150 to 600; a 300% growth. The advertisers are expected to bring Twitter $150 million in advertisement revenue this year.

Email marketing is a more effective marketing tool as traffic driver than social media.

A study conducted by the research analysis firm ForeSee Results found that people preferred to hear about what a particular company was doing via email rather than social media.

The survey covers the websites for 40 retailers and the survey group totals around 20,000 people. It found that only 5% said social media interactions are their primary influence when it came to driving them toward a particular website. And when they do visit the website because of a social media prompt they are less likely to purchase anything than those who visited either from a link in an email or via search.

19% of website views came about thanks to promotional emails and 8% due to search engine results, nearly a quarter thanks to ‘traditional’ e-marketing methods compared to the fractional results produced by social media.

In terms of converting time and money spent into revenue and profit social media is valuable but it’s much more a long game than a well placed email and an efficient SEO campaign.
