Today’s blog comes courtesy of Geri Rockstein of Writeforthenet.com. With that kind of domain, you have to know Geri is a web content writer. In fact, an esteemed content writer who knows of what she speaks. And on that happy note, over to Geri…

“Content Is King”

“Content is king” seems to be a buzz word in the industry. But what does that really mean? And does anyone really care?

If you surf the net regularly, and I do, then you have probably found that there are a lot of websites out there that really have nothing to offer. The true value of a website is its content and the quality of the content may ultimately determine the success or failure of a website. But when most people are thinking about designing or redesigning their websites they are largely fixated on fancy FLASH animation.

Well written content entertains, informs, engages, inspires, and motivates. And search engines love it when it is keyword rich. Let’s give the search engines and the searchers what they want – fresh, factual, relevant, original content. But, how do we educate the companies that own the websites in the value of content when I have seen ads on Craig’s List offering to buy web copywriting services for $0.01/word? It’s hard to convince someone that the single most important ingredient on a commercial website is content, when except for the industry insiders, content is greatly undervalued and misunderstood. We’ve been great at talking the talk. We’re still singing “Content is king” from the rooftops. But when are we going to start walking the walk?

Rodney Dangerfield’s famous line, “I can’t get no respect”, must be what content would say if it was personified and had a voice.
