Keep your niche to yourself!

I was answering some questions for an interview today, and one of the questions prompted me to write this post.

If you do nothing else in your web entepreneurship efforts, for goodness sake, keep your mouth shut about what niche you are in. I have many sites, in many different markets, and I freely let people know what some of those are. And some of my other sites can be ferreted out with a little research. But my best sites? The ones that pay the bills? I hide those from the world. Why? And why should you?

Let me tell you a little story.

A few years ago, I had a client that had #1 rankings for a highly lucrative niche market. I had recently doubled his monthly income and everyone was happy. Then, in a discussion with another SEO that I thought was trustworthy, I spilled the beans on what niche the site was in. The very next day, that SEO created a site in that niche and did his best to outrank me. Luckily, he never accomplished his goal, but he came close, and I was sweating bullets over it. If he had pushed my client down in the rankings even 1 spot, it would have cost my client thousands of dollars per DAY. Needless to say, I learned my lesson well.

So, if you've found a good niche (and good niches are worth their weight in gold), keep it to yourself!

Unless you are Shoemoney. He seems to do well while spilling the beans and tells how he did it exactly.

I am guessing Shoemoney is the exception.
