1. How To Track Pinning With Google Analytics?

Like many embedable buttons the Pin It code creates an iframe through JavaScript; and you can't add anything to the code in that iframe..

The workaround is to put HTML code in place that does all the work of tracking, making the URL to be submitted, and showing the button. Like so:

<a onclick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'pinterest', 'pinned']);
window.open(this.href, 'signin', 'height=300,width=665'); return
false" href="http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url='document.URL'
+ &media=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com%2Fimage.jpg
&description=awesome%20description" style="position: absolute;
background: url('http://assets.pinterest.com/images/pinit6.png');font:
11px Arial, sans-serif; text-indent: -9999em; font-size: .01em; color:
#CD1F1F; height: 20px; width: 43px; background-position: 0 -7px;"
count-layout="horizontal">Pin It</a>

Change the media and description to your own.

2. How To Track Pinterest Traffic In Google Analytics?

So how much traffic is Pinterest driving to your site?

Easy to find out in Google Analytics' referral reports.

Go to Traffic Sources > Sources > Referrals Report. From there, if you dont see pinterest.com (or m.pinterest.com) in your top 10 referrals, search pinterest using the inline filter at the top of the table.

Also available: a cool custom segment.

3. How To Pin Photos With Your iPhone?

Get the Pinterest app. Go to its home screen and click the camera button to snap a photo and upload it or use the square-in-square button on the right to upload a photo that's already on your phone.

Want to pin a photo from the web?

Browse the web using the Safari app and discover images that suit your tastes. Once you find a suitable image, make sure the photo is full size and then press tap on the photo to get the menu above to pop up. This way you can save the image to your iPhone and then pin it from the Pinterest application at your leisure.

    I admit, I am a Pinterest hater. Ihave no idea why it annoys me, but it does. I want to not hate it…I understand the potential benefits…I think Pinterest and I need to have a sit down and figure things out.

      I hear you, Jeff. One way of getting a near-immediate feel and understanding for it is as seeing as a non-geeky Tumblr. Pinterest is the user friendly version of Tumblr :)

  4. Am I the only one who wants to ban all new social media sites? How much time can one spend "socializing" in a virtual world?

    Anyway, thanks for the info. I've had some clients asking for various Pinterest tips and I am DEFINITELY not the one to ask.

      I feel like that about WordPress updates sometimes; just when you've settled into one a notice about the next one is up while they're already talking about the beat of the version after that!

      Glad to have been of help, Alison

    Ruud,

    Thanks for the Pinteresting "techy tips." I've hopped on the network, but really haven't drilled down yet to track or block. Though I do not think I wish to try the latter.

    Appreciate the extra insight,

    Thank you for your post Ruud. I linked here via Gemma Thompson (above) on Facebook.

    As an aging (65 young) early adopter of social media and intuitive marketer, I believe Pinterest is a marketer's dream come true. It's said pictures are worth a thousand words and when you look past the enjoyment hobbyist and folks just enjoying the visual experience, Pinterest is like a giant road map. Images, photos, videos, and products or services for sales can include a link and a price (thanks for the $$ tip in your blog).

    Your analytic tips are great! I look forward to following and sharing your knowledge with my clients.
