For the record, we have clickable thumbnails that are indexed by Google News. However, they are also of a reasonable size (>100px each dimension).

"Note that these recommendations come from my point of view as an SEO specialist, and I reckon they would benefit from a journalistic perspective." Good point. It's easy to get too focused on the technical aspects and forget that a good percentage of SEO happens indirectly as a vote from 'the people'. No doubt good journalists always keep in mind the viral potential of article content, and if the story is remarkable, links - and therefore ranking - will follow effortlessly.

@Matt, from what I have seen Google used to take the headline from the H1 or H2 tag it deemed most likely to be the actual article headline. The recently adopted expanded scheme for the Google News sitemap seems to have changed this, and Google now appears to take the headline from the title as mentioned in the sitemap.

I've worked on a news site where Google picked the wrong headline (taking the [badly coded] search box text as the headline, which was featured just above the article text in the HTML code), but that problem has vanished with the adoption of the new expanded News sitemap scheme.

How does Google choose the title? Does it pick the news headline tagged H1, or does it take the keyword rich title created for ranking?

Uncertainty on this is one reason why I have not dared tackle Google news so far!
