@ Hj?r SmᲡson - thanks for the comment. Right now Stumbleupon has no impact on Google results ... its owned by eBay. Though, they have built a plugin that permits people to see stumble votes of friends in Google's search results ... great move on their part.

I suspect this is exactly where Wikia is heading, though they've not got the critical mass or distribution channels to make it happen.

@ Pete - there are so many ways to look at it all .. guess that's what makes it so much fun huh?

@ Jim - Great point! I'm sure there will be attempts to game and influence the 'most influencial' friends, but in the end, friends will still have the ability to choose which friends they most trust. Those with suspect motives, will not be trusted, and will be removed from the reordering process.

@ James - LOL ... to me it makes too much sense not to implement. I trust my friends judgement alot more than Google's algorithm. Thanks for the comment James!

Looks like your WOM integration will soon be a reality Jeff. Seems that Delver are developing that exact capability - http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/28/delver-comes-out-of-stealth-with-a-new-twist-on-social-search/

I think this is like blogs - very good to begin with.

What I suspect will happen is that WOM will be gamed.

For example Digg is already being gamed - groups are promoting their content by banding together to give it Diggs.

@ Jeff - that's actually very true - I hadn't thought of it from that angle - thanks for the further clarification.

Very intresting subject.

Does anyone know what effect StumbleUpOn has on Google results now? They tag results that have been reviewed there.

It will also be interesting to see where Jimmy Wales wikia search will head in the future. Of course Google and Yahoo must be trying to beat that on forehand.

@ Anne - thanks. I agree completely!

@ Ruud - so who will purchase Stumble from eBay, or perhaps even eBay itself?

@ Mike - agreed ... it will take some time. If we know anything about the engines themselves, they are very strategic in their moves, and don't do anything on a whim :). So, expect it to be implemented gradually over time.

@ Pete - have to disagree Pete. It will help the small guy immensely. Keep in mind, the vision is that the results would be reorganized to show your friend's preferences first in many cases ... which means the small local garage used by a number of your friends (and who they'd recommend) appears at the top of your SERPs. Same quaint little delis, sports stores, bars, etc. If you've got a good cross section of friends locally ... small local business will be well served by the change.

Love the post and I agree with you about this being the direction search will take... although I still don't see this helping the smaller companies that don't get a mention in the SERPs.

Most of those small businesses aren't mentioned in the SERPs because they don't fully comprehend how search really works. This means that they probably aren't going to be tagged and bookmarked or even referenced in any other social media because the driving force behind social media is 'being social'.

If you aren't interacting with other online communities and influential social media users, you'll simply be overlooked.

This leaves it up to us (the SEOs and SMMs) to guide such users into the daunting world of social media - with great power comes great responsibility :)
