SES Toronto 2009: Why You Need Great Quality Scores!

by Tyler Calder.

Oh Quality Score, how I love thee. When you're happy, you can give me all my favourite keywords at such low prices - but when you're sad, you drive your prices up and I can't afford you. Please tell me how I can keep you happy.

Okay, so Quality Score can't speak, but luckily, we have a fantastic panel that will give us some insight into Quality Score - what it is, why it matters and how to keep it high and your costs low.

Anne Kennedy of Beyond Ink will be moderating this sessions with Andrew Goodman of Page Zero Media and David Sprinkle of Acronym Media acting as our panelists.

How to Write PPC Ad Copy: Four Ad Templates that Cause Clicks and Conversions

by Tom Demers.

Ad copy is one of the most important elements of a successful PPC campaign: successfully crafting and optimizing ad text will often make or break a paid search campaign.

But creating and testing PPC ad copy is difficult. You have to take several factors into account:

  • Not a lot of room to message – The search engines only afford you 25 characters in each headline and 35 characters in each of two description lines:

SEP’s PPC Tips: Beta Testing the New Google Adwords Interface

by Tyler Calder.

Google has been slowly rolling out the new AdWords interface to beta testers over the past few months and we here at Search Engine People have had the chance to immerse ourselves in it for a little while now and I must say – colour us impressed!

The new interface has a ‘sexier’ look and feel to it which is a little more akin to the Analytics interface, but as we all know, looks aren’t everything.  So how about functionality?  I’m happy to say that there have been some vast improvements over the previous interface.  Functionality is a little more in line with AdWords Editor, which is the tool of all tools for anyone managing large scale PPC campaigns.  MORE AFTER THE JUMP!

Microsoft adCenter Desktop Beta - Google AdWords Editor Junior

by The Doug.

In June of this year, Microsoft ( MSFT ) went public with beta testing of their desktop editor for PPC marketing, proving that they are getting even more serious about competing in the Paid Search arena.  Although they still have some vast distances to travel in order to compete on the field with Google, they have clearly taken some strategic first steps forward on this journey, which makes putting campaigns up on the adCenter platform much easier than the spreadsheet build previously required.

Match and Game! Google Automatic Keyword Match

by The Doug.

So there I was, minding my own business, when all of a sudden I had a conversion on one of my campaigns (ALWAYS exciting) but I couldn't attribute it to any of the keywords in the adgroup it was showing up for.  "Well!  How can THAT be?!", says I.

After running a search query to investigate further, I found the little miracle keyword that so silently and wonderfully threw a conversion my way.  I found it, and it was not a broad, exact, or even phrase match.  It was Automatic.  That's right!  It's not an option that you just choose like the others, but in fact a beta that Google inserted on various accounts with the "you need to do nothing in order for this feature to be turned on" type of message.

So it would seem that everyone is in a race to become as transparent as possible. It has become (clearly) evident that there is more revenue potential out there by opening up everything and making it available than there is by keeping it all horded and secret and hidden in the dark.

Cell phone technology is a brilliant example of transparency becoming extremely key. It's helping mobile carriers and equipment providers to quickly and easily design, develop, and deploy in tandem. It's also giving software development platforms such as Google and Microsoft the opportunity to build out their handset web technologies.
