Even in your example of the light bulbs - you could make an animated story - for example a Box ring and various lightbulbs fight for "Longest Lasting" medal, and your brand take the win. Just fast example of nice humor on light bulbs. I agree - some businesses can't use it, but most of them can :)
Cheers

Craig, that's a great point!

I have friends who work in advertising agencies, and advertising has changed a lot these days. The bar has been raised significantly, and people are really going out of their way to stand out of the crowd.

As for making it relevant, I think it depends on one's mastery: you can make it funny and still make it relevant. My favorites have long been language school commercials, take this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh5xu35bAxA for instance :))))

Cheers,

Thank you, Emil!

I realize people are different, and some things are not to everybody's liking. I guess I'm the kind of person who likes colorful things, while there are definitely people who like minimalist things, for example.
But we seem to agree on the one with penguins. ;)

Best,

Thanks, Olga!

I totally agree with you. SEO has been proclaimed dead so many times, for example, just because some individual technique(s) stopped working.

I agree. But like I said, if you create a viral video based around light bulbs for instance. The viral campaign may make you remember, but why would you want to buy a certain brand of bulb? It wouldn't make sense for certain brands to use humor.

I agree on that, but I think there is humor in every business (ok, almost every). You can think of a humoristic idea even if your business is not humor based, it just need some creativity.

I feel the humor banners would be the way to go. Take advertising in general: If you watch a funny TV commercial you will be more prone to remembering it -- along with the product. Just don't create something funny for a product/business/site that's not humor based. Sure, click-through rates may be high, but conversion will no doubt be terrible -- with the user feeling conned.

Great article and great banners! I love the one with the penguins... maybe the most creative one in our business nowadays :)
Still, i am wondering about the 6th type - Colors-of-the-rainbow banner... I usually hate those yellow banners, they are like stick in my eyes.

Wow, awesome examples here, Alesia!

You just proved my point that banners are not dead, most marketers are just too lazy to make more egaging, unusual and top-notch pieces that will be noticed and will be pleasant to look at.

It's also true with other techniques too. It's silly to say something isn't working only because you're not pushing hard to make it remarkable.

Thanks for the post!
