You can use the tips Google Page Insights gives you.

These are the main ones:
– Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
– Optimize images
– Leverage browser caching

These are pretty much handy as you can use them to test for various types of popular smart phones and tabs too..
