That is true, over the time Google algorithm has been improved a lot. What was working back in 2012 doesn't work now. Google has officially announced that they're not considering Meta Keywords as a ranking factor and I am very sure that soon Meta Description will not be a part of their Algo.

You really highlighted some most common misconceptions that people still has in their minds about Google's Algorithm.

For me, I think the best way to rank your site is for you to have a unique and very interesting content that people will actually want to reference to. Most articles that went viral are those providing tips, ideas, list of something relevant etc., while some articles are really eye catching, e.g. trolling a presidential candidate or someone known publicly.

What's important is the quality and user engagement. The more people links to your article, the more your article climbs up the google ranks. Given you did your part of making sure that your page is optimized.

Just my thoughts. MHO.
