Cory, maybe a contest to gain followers would be an idea then? You could say: follow me and tweet "I follow ACME because they make the best cartoons" in order to win an ipad2 (or whatever)

Of course that's a pure numbers strategy. For relevance I prefer to monitor for keywords or key phrases and follow people based on that. I'd keep that manual, certainly when you just start out. There's a difference between someone tweeting "I love blue widgets" and someone tweeting "my sister loves blue widgets but I could care less". That's where it's important to not have a full-on bot approach :)

Let us know how things went for you!

I appreciate the tips...I have recently started to use twitter and have found it difficult to keep it fresh. I think a contest would be most appropriate for my angle. What are the best ways to recruit followers?

Valid question, Vivian.

I think the audiences and actions on Facebook and Twitter a different. Different people, different numbers, different ways of doing things.

To me that means that no matter if you come at it from a marketing perspective or a personal angle, being on both to communicate something in the right way to the right people makes sense.

On a personal level I'm much more of a Twitter user simply because much of what I could do on Facebook (sharing updates, news, photos, videos) I already do elsewhere and in different ways.

And just having the account already makes sense, to me. I like and recommend Chris Brogan's series on "outposts" and "passports" in that regard.

I've long wanted to open a Twitter account – in fact, I had one before I went on Facebook. After that, it just seemed redundant to have both a Twitter account and a Facebook one, so I killed my Twitter – but somehow I feel I'm missing out on something. Could somebody tell me, please, why one should have an account both in Twitter and in Facebook?
