So Matt, if you're asking how to guest blog for a website that is not conducive to lots of content, I'd say look further afield to the broader category in which the website fits.

For example, one of my other businesses is a passport and visa expediting service. While most people don't know the details about travel docs, and there is some on-going news updates about them to provide fodder for blog posts, it's tough to write interesting stuff that's always directly related to travel documents. It's a pretty boring topic that no one cares about until that moment of panic when they really need it right away. However, the broader category of international travel is easy to write about, and it's going to get a lot more casual page views on the sites where that content is published, which makes guest blogging an important strategy for that business.

The same goes for engagement. We can provide tips and chime in on sites that deal with international travel, and become known as helpful individuals who happen to run a related service. We simply won't get a huge facebook following about expedited passports, because it's not the kind of thing that anyone cares about more than once or twice in a lifetime.

Your guest blogging efforts are really to help search engines say, "Among credible, authoritative sites about X, it seems that site Y is well-regarded." In that respect, guest blogging can do a lot for you, even if you have a hard time coming up with fresh content for your own site.

I hear this term quality vs. efficiency. However, it really depends on what kind of website you have. Some websites are not primary content based or sites that are hard to generate content. So do the same issues apply to these sites?

Great suggestions-- guest blogging is all about value and relationships. It can be tough to squeeze those ideas into SEO tactics, but long-lived businesses are built on value and relationships, aren't they?

Great post Mike. I would also add to this list that adding images and/or videos creates a much greater value proposition. The web is overloaded with plain content and adding multimedia can help get those articles published.

Additionally, I would also mention the importance of treating those sites as connections, not just people to get links from. This will make a big difference as SEO evolves towards social shares.

Finally, encouraging engagement is important too.

IMO, in the post-penguin era, guest blogging remains one of the most safest fool-proof (and Penguin-proof) ways of building quality backlinks and good SERPs.

That's right, guys. The quality vs. efficiency issue in SEO (and content production in general) is a hard one, but Google's mostly making the choice for us. Quality wins.

Give the anchor text a rest is a good one. It's worth checking using something like seomoz the actual anchor text %

After the recent penguin crash I checked and over 80% of my keywords were highly targeted.

I've decided to cut back on the rubbish and stop hiring people for next to nothing to write blog posts and actually create something worth linking too.

Definitely, guest blogging is a proven SEO tactic. But you should make sure you don't crank out guest posts one after another. If you're trying to improve your SEO via guest blogging, you should pay careful attention to creating only high quality guest posts.

Who knows Google if Google starts penalizing sites that crank out low quality guest posts for building links!

Thanks for the useful tips.
