whatever google has in its algorithms that people know would bring value to a site will always get abused by people with money to manipulate it. so it is not about backlink but what is in the algorithm. when it is related to money people will try their best to get it. and in a world that is not so generous unpleasant thing will likely to happen more than pleasant one.

Why stop selling links when Google has already whipped you?Why not just continue and let the number of interested buyers decrease naturally because of the reduced PR.

All in all, this issue is quite tricky.I have said a number of times that this whole backlink thing for determining PR is a thing of the past. Google must come up with a new way altogether.

I think Google’s fear tactics are working on a small scale. I know of a lady who has stopped selling links on her site because her PR dropped from a PR7 to a PR3. Also, I just noticed today that statcounter is using the nofollow tag on it’s paid links on the right side. Their PR had dropped from a 9 to a 6.
