Lately, I've been having a lot of work done on my house. Well, I should clarify. I have been TRYING to have a lot of work done on my house. I am amazed at the number of times I have made phone calls to companies to get an estimate on a job, and one of the following happens.
- I leave a message and never get a call back.
- I talk to someone and they make an appointment to come by. Then they don't show up. Nor do they call to reschedule. I just never hear from them again.
Of the 100 or so calls I've made over the last few months, 3 people have actually returned my calls and showed up for appointments. Guess who got my money?
I mention this, because we as SEOs and Webmasters are also like contractors and service people. Our users or clients are the people who give us their money. Are we doing what we need to do to make sure we get their business?
If you are a webmaster, does your site convey the message that the user will get good service? Does your site make the user feel comfortable that she is not wasting her time?
If you are an SEO, do you respond to inquiries on a timely basis? Do you follow up with potential or current clients to make sure they know you haven't forgotten about them?
Sometimes, we need to make sure our toolbelt isn't causing our pants to ride down, and start thinking about how we can best present ourselves. It isn't all about SEO. It's also about many other things, including presentation and instilling a sense of trustworthiness. Take a little time off from keywords, optimization, and link building to look at your site or your business from a user's point of view.
Just my thoughts for the day, as I wait on the landscapers to show up.
