Rough day for SEO Scoop

The hosting company where SEO Scoop resides had some major problems today, so all of the sites that I host there were down for a good portion of the day. I hate days like this. My stomach ties in knots. I fret. I start thinking, again, of moving to another host. I fret some more.

Am now seriously considering finally making the plunge to a dedicated server. I dread the move of a bunch of sites, many with databases, and complex needs. What a hassle it would be. But I think in the long run, it would be the wisest choice.

I am considering using Vivio Technologies, primarily because their dedicated servers have the functionality that I need (ability to serve ColdFusion, without costing extra). If anyone has any feedback on Vivio, I'd appreciate it.

Also, I'm nervous in general about the whole process of being responsible for a dedicated server. The plan above is managed, so I assume that takes a fair amount of trouble out of my hands, but if anyone has anything to say about it, I'd appreciate it. I'm capable. I used to run my own server, way back in the day, but it was a Windows server, and it sat physically right next to me. A Linux box across the continent might be a whole 'nuther ball game. Thoughts?

If you live near a datacenter it might be a better option to just buy a server and rent some space for it.

If you own the server then you are free to do whatever you want with it, and if you feel like moving you could just drive down to the datacenter pick up your server and take it some place else.

    Good luck whatever you do.

Heh, since Hurricane Katrina wiped us out here, I’d be worried that I’d see my server floating down the river in the next big storm. I think having a server in this area would be a bad idea. 🙂

Donna, 14thC came from the fallout of Katrina. The DC I had my old site at was wiped out and I no longer had access to my site (fortunately they mirrored it but I still couldn’t FTP). I had to get some client files published and found the host I am with now – royaltyhosting.com They have cheap prices and excellent service and communication. I happily recomend them for shared hosting. And agree that using a local DC for you would not be a good idea because of what happened to me.

In fact, did you see my server floating past you that weekend?

My personal choice after being through lots of hosts is http://site5.brightonvibes.com (appologies for the affiliate link but it saves you money 🙂 )

If you get the unleashed plan you can host as many sites as you want.

I have not had one problem.

And I MUST advise you to check out the FlashBack system that they have, its out of this world.

    Dave
