Thanks for the great interview. Personally I agree with you, the RIGHT paid links are great. With this almost artificial "link based economy" that Google primarily has created, it's almost a necessity if you are to rank well for competitive keywords.

99% of SEO's would probably not follow every google recommendation/rule to the letter if they are to have any kind of success, and other than a few put up "as an example" there have been few people penalised unless they are doing something very obvious or stupid. Even though blatently buying links rarely get any penalty EVEN when doing it in a stupid manner AND having been reported to Google via webmaster tools - the big G just doesn't put much resources into all that manual checking vs the amount of complaints they must get!

Thank you both so much...I really, really had a good time answering Ruud's questions. So far only one person has said I was TOO honest. That's a good thing.

I don't really have anything insightful to add, just wanted to leave a note telling Julie that that was a refreshingly honest interview. Good person. Good job!

First, great interview! I concur wholeheartedly with Julie's take on link building, particularly with her perspective on paid links. As with any other SEO strategy, it's a matter of knowing when to break the "so-called rules" and, more importantly, how to break those rules without slapping a big flag on your forehead that says, "Na, na, na, boo-boo...I know your rules and I crap on them thusly!"

The fact is that some site owners just don't have the time to invest in the super long-term strategies and tactics that result in an entirely natural plethora of backlinks, for whatever reason...be it lack of resources or a need to make a name for themselves fast in order to compete in their market. For those who have more money to throw at the issue than time, hiring someone like Julie who knows how to approach a paid link strategy the RIGHT way is a great solution.

Second, this one goes out to Julie Joyce - you are AWESOMESAUCE! And thanks for the shout out. Your vote of confidence means a lot and I really appreciate it. :)
