Spot on Michael. Do you have any specific examples or case studies you can share that demonstrate how to do this effectively?

Couldn't agree more with your assessment Nick. Social cues are ranking higher in each succeeding SEO industry poll. We've seen first page rankings for medium competition words using proper on page optimization and social bookmarking alone.

I think people experience social media overload when they attempt to lay all their eggs in one social media basket, like tweeting automated inspirational tweets every 15 minutes. Using a variety of niche related social media outlets and updating with original content always wins with the search engines.

I couldn't agree more, Nick. In fact, in a previous SEP post of mine (on Facebook SEO tips) I argued that, thanks to Google Panda, SMM and SEO are so close to becoming synonyms which is exactly what you beautifully detailed here.
On the one hand, things are getting easier in the sense that when you publish a keywords-rich blog post, you will get the best of both worlds: SMM & SEO. In other words, you no longer need to dedicate separate time for each of them.
On the other hand, growing number of businesses are complaining about social media stress especially with G+ added to the mix and the continuous efforts needed to build a solid social influence. What are some of the recommendations that you give your clients to work smart not hard on social media? In fact, I wonder how are you personally dealing with SMM/SEO fatigue?
