Re: Michael Seals – I prefer SpyFu to SEMrush, but I suppose like everything it is a matter of personal choice (and to be fair SpyFu kind of fitted in better with the Sherlock Holmes feel of the post, which probaly gave it that edge!)

Re:Tim – Totally agree with you, as I said in the post it is important to come up with your own ideas – but there is nothing wrong with ‘borrowing’ a few!

Re: Michael Haley – I learn things daily (several times over) and I am sure that every SEO will tell you the same. It is an ever evolving beast (and that is probably why it is the most fun!)

I think these are great ideas.
You have to stay on top of the industry.
this works especially well if one person has owned the SERPs for a while they tend to slack off and you can reverse engineer what they do and get great results.

An alternative to SpyFu is SEMRush which I use, not quite as robust but provides similar data I can use to make decisions quickly. I really like Google Alerts as well and Twitter Search. For one particular client we were able to identify a couple products they were having success with and get them ourselves, we enjoyed a piece of that pie…products sold out in 3 weeks.
