I&#039;m working in a niche of competitive market:  men&#039;s clothing.

- I was wondering, since I&#039;m working within a niche of competitive market, how many keywords should I test if I just want to get an idea of how often a keyword is searched for?

- What would be the best way to to choose the keywords for such a test?

- And, once I&#039;ve gathered data on how often a keyword is searched for, what sort of thresholds/criteria should I use to figure out if a keyword should be targeted for PPC?  for SEO.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or pointers.

Good question, Joe. Unfortunately it all depends on how competitive of an industry you&#039;re in. I try and just get a 2-4 week sample, not necessarily gunning for clicks. There are two ways to do PPC Keyword Research:

Method 1: Don&#039;t bid high, just get an idea of how often a keyword is searched for. You&#039;re not trying to get people to click through, you&#039;re just trying to get your ad displayed so you can get a better idea of keyword volume.

Method 2: Looking at the quality of the keyword (will people convert?). To do this you&#039;ll probably want to do the 4 week test and actually spend some $$ to get as much data as you can.
