So many of my friends love Facebook and so many of my friends and family won't use Facebook.

I see many companies scrambling to get "liked" on Facebook. They pay social media startup businesses to build fan pages and fill them up with friends. One "social media marketer" shared with me how to build hundreds of fake Facebook accounts to instantly build credibility.

How long before people unlike social media and go to the next shiny entertainment?

And, yes I tweet over Facebook.

Ruud,

Great post and very illustrative. Although I understand Rick's concerns and philosophy, I believe that Facebook's incredibly powerful social graph will be the game changer for social direct marketers.

Companies that want to stay relevant with their core customers will need to identify each customer's Facebook & Twitter url, understand if their customer is a fan of their company page or a Twitter follower, and be ready to engage in the channel each customer prefers.

This is just the beginning of what may become a marketing bonanza for those consultants and marketing firms that understand how to leverage targeting! Wonderful post!

I don't have machine that prints, scans, copies, and faxes.

I won't allow AT&T to provide my TV, Phone, and Internet.

I don't have one gizmo that feeds, displays, and records entertainment media.

I don't pay all my bills with one auto-pay credit card.

I don't do all my Office chores with one software package.

It was Microsoft, then Google, now Facebook. There is always some company that wants to "service" all of my needs.

I'm sorry, but that's just creepy.

And beyond that, experience has taught me to have backup systems in place so I'm not dead in the water when one inevitably goes down.

I have cable, I have DSL, and I have Dail-Up. I have multiple email accounts, multiple computers, several automobiles, multiple phones and multiple carriers. And at on time or another, I have needed every backup method I have had available .

I like redundancy and I prefer to be repetitious. Call me old-fashioned, but old-fashioned works :-)
