Dialup sucks so bad it should be free

I'm actually living in my new house now, although most of my "stuff" needs to be moved in. But for another week and a half, I'm stuck with dialup internet access. OMG, dialups sucks big time. Half the time, I can only connect at less than 20K, and no pages will load. Instead, I get timeout errors. So, I have to sign off and wait a while and try again...and again...and again, until I give up and come back hours later.

Even with a "decent" connection speed of 45K or more, the wait to load a page (even simple ones like Google's) is unbearable. And forget about multi-tasking. I like to have several tabs open at once so I can get lots of things done at the same time. Ha! With dialup, opening up more than one tab is a sure bet that I'll get more timeout errors.

Why, oh why, does it actually cost money for something that is so incredibly bad? A relative of mine, who barely makes ends meet, was complaining the other day that her son's teacher only posts homework on the Internet. They can't afford a computer, much less another monthly bill for net access, so she is very frustrated. I've got a decent computer I can give her, but she'll still have to deal with getting online. If someone like BellSouth or any of the major telcos would offer dialup for free, it would make a world of difference. And since dialup sucks so much (did I mention dialup sucks?), it should be free! No one should have to pay for such poor performance.

So, that's my rant for the day. It's better than complaining about my sore muscles and aching feet from lifting box after heavy box today.
