I Suggest We Love Google Suggest

Ruud Hein by Ruud Hein
August 29, 2008

Some news events, such as Iraq’s invasion into Kuwait way back when, have me go “whoaaa!”, awaiting the big media or world response – but it takes a little while, making me doubt my initial reaction.

On the other hand, sometimes items drift through my river of news views that have me shrug my shoulder – and now the whole world is on it, again making me doubt my initial reaction.

Google Suggest is one of those non-events of the latter category, for me.

But for its historical value (“… and on that day Google…” yadah, yadah, yadah) it’s simply one of those things that make me go “hmmmm?”

10 Meta-Search Engines Reviewed and Compared

Ann Smarty Guest post by Ann Smarty
August 27, 2008

Meta-search engine is a web-based service that aggregates data from a number of search engines. A meta search engine doesn’t have a database of indexed pages of its own. Instead it “sends a user’s query to multiple search engines and blends the top results from each into one overall list.”

Some helpful features meta-search engines offer are:

  • search results clustering (i.e. search term grouping and classification based on the word derivations and phrases). Like I previously suggested, this feature can be effectively used for keyword research and brainstorming);
  • related term suggestions (also used for expanding keyword lists);

Navigational Queries & The SERP You Should Own

Ruud Hein by Ruud Hein
August 22, 2008

A navigational query is one where the searcher knows where she wants to go to find something.

An informational query alternatively is one where the searcher knows what she’d like to do or find but does not know how this can be achieved.

Navigational queries come in two types:

  1. a word, name or brand strongly or uniquely associated with one particular web site: HP, ebay, hotmail, new york times, yahoo.
  2. a partial or complete web address: ebay.com, www.hotmail, yahoo.co

The 1st type is what is usually meant with navigational query.The 2nd type is called a URL query.

Lora Lufark Guest post by Lora Lufark
August 20, 2008

Snatch of conversation:

- I beg your pardon? Assets? You probably meant to say “puppets” didn’t you?

- Whatever you call them, dear: puppets, fake accounts or users, bots, tools… assets!

- Hm… But the creation of err… sock err … fake err …multiple accounts within one community most often goes against their T&C…

- Yes, of course it does, but it can’t effectively be policed and it can’t possibly be ever enforced…

Google Insights is one of those services that makes me go "hmmmm" in a yummie kind of way. I like numbers, data, stats, a lot. Doesn’t have to be meaningful either; just about any statistical insight is a good one.

For example, Philippe Kahn shares that it’s a statistical fact that people with larger feet are better spellers. Why? "It’s because people with bigger feet are older."

slaps forehead

It is in this vain that I share with you the following Google Insights :)
